Winding Springs with Less than 90 Degrees of Turning Area

When replacing garage door torsion springs there are often low ceilings which do not allow the full 90 degrees of turn needed to wind the springs. Following is a simple procedure for gaining the space needed to wind your springs.

Get it right the first time!

First, disconnect the opener drawbar arm from the door if you have an opener.

Next, remove the top rollers. There are usually one or two bolts and nuts holding the top roller carrier and top roller to the top fixture.

After removing the fasteners, the roller and roller carrier will be free to remove. After you remove the second top roller, be careful to support the top section so it doesn’t fall down and bend your hinges and possibly damage your door.

Next, rotate the top of the top section down and place the top of the section on a ladder, or support it with a board or some other object.

With the bottom of the top section still attached to the door with the hinges, and the top of the top section on the ladder, you can now wind the spring or springs.

Before winding the spring, vise grip the track above one of the rollers as shown in our instructions. The door is more likely to come up with the top section rotated down.

After winding the springs, reinstall the top of the top section, the top rollers, and the drawbar arm.
